Growing is glorious

19th October 2017

Last night club leaders worked with the children on how to build a herb garden in the House garden.  They started it off last night with a mint plant.  Anita explained to the children how to set up a herb garden.  You can see from the photo they used stones from the garden so that the compost would have good drainage, the stones were added to the bottom of the container and then the girls added the soil.  They were advised to break up the soil as it allows air to get to the plants.  Anita explained that the roots are very intrusive in a pot so the mint was potted in a smaller pot before being added to the bigger pot.  The plant was then watered.  The group will soon be adding other herbs to our herb garden which they will then use in our healthy recipes, they are running classes every Thursday night where club members can cook up a healthy storm each week!

There was an opportunity for the kids to sample the mint and asked for their feedback.  As you can see from the photos, some were not so keen on the taste whilst others who don't normally try different foods loved it!  With the New Healthy Sheppey Project the kids at House at Eastchurch, which runs on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon between 15:30 to 17:00 are experiencing new tastes with the healthy cooking and gardening and so far are loving it.
